Our Story
Manchester Mega Mela is the largest celebration of South Asian culture in the North of England. Music, dance, food and traditional arts and crafts bring the sights, sounds and spicy aromas of South Asia to Platt Fields Park each year. The Mela is a two-day, fun-filled event which takes place in the summer.
The Mela is renowned for always hosting a wide variety of great attractions. Some of the biggest names in the UK and international Asian entertainment scene perform on two stages across both days. Other attractions include a huge selection of food stalls, free henna painting, rangoli, face painting, dance workshops, a fashion show, a funfair and Kabaddi.
Something For Everyone
Some of the biggest names in UK and international Asian entertainment perform across both days. The Main Stage programme is hosted and presented by Sunrise Radio, with previous hosts including BBC Asian Network, Brit Asia TV, DM Digital and ZEE TV.
A huge selection of food stalls serving a mouth-watering range of authentic South Asian food. Trading stalls also offer everything from traditional and contemporary clothing to music and crafts.
A chai cafe with seating where mela-goers can relax and enjoy a community-led stage programme of classical and contemporary dance and music — including much-loved performances by local school children.
A space for emerging South Asian artists to showcase their talents, with hands-on workshops for mela-goers. Past programmes have featured rangoli, henna painting, face painting and block printing.
Rides, games and a funfair keep the whole family entertained all weekend, alongside dance workshops, a fashion show and Kabaddi — there's something for every age.
Bringing Communities Together
This popular festival has been organised by the Manchester Mela Executive Committee since 2003 and has been a huge success year upon year. The committee comprises representatives of the five South Asian nations, uniting communities through one shared celebration.
Mela-goers from all over the North attend each year, with audiences in excess of 70,000. The Mela is enjoyed by people from all cultures and religions, and families from all walks of life come to spend the weekend together at this free event.
