HIGHLIGHTS OF ZEE MANCHESTER MEGA MELA 2017

MAIN STAGE

The Main Stage Programme is being hosted and presented by ZEE TV. Some of the biggest names on the UK and international Asian entertainment scene will perform over both days. Artists from all 5 countries - Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka will enthral the audience with their show-stopping performances.

CHAI SERAI MARQUEE

The Chai Serai Marquee, with a chai cafe and seating provisions, gives the mela-goers an opportunity to relax and enjoy a community led stage programme of folklore, classical and contemporary dance and music.

Performances by local school children are an added attraction.

ARTS & CRAFT MARQUEE

The Arts & Crafts Marquee is an activity centre comprising of various Arts & Crafts Workshops, amongst other activities throughout the day. This marquee is always very popular with people of all ages, as it offers free henna painting, rangoli, card making, face painting and balloon modelling.

This year Z-arts will be providing a two day fun-filled activity based around the family performance Tales of Birbal.

Paper Crafts by Taruna Shah

Come and enjoy the Art of Quilling - making cards, jewellery and fridge magnets. Also craft from paper rolling and book folding plus Stone Rangoli

Room on the Broom by The Lowry

Join The Lowry for some crafty activities inspired by the classic picture book ‘Room on the Broom’, and now.

Greetings cards by Shaheen Shah

With the help of Shaheen Shah, you will be making greetings cards using a selection of papers, tissue, handmade made papers, ribbons, fabrics, and stick on letters and designs.

Workshops by Chrissy Webster

Chrissy will be making oriental kites/lanterns such as koinobori using a mix of recycled materials.

Henna by Asia Javed, Mehzabin Bux & Zulaikhah Shabbir

These henna artists will provide free henna service and create designs combining traditional and modern patterns. Applying glitter for a sparkly touch.

Batik workshop with Rita Patel from Knowsley Community College

Batik is an art/craft form derived from the Middle East, India and Indonesia. Batik is a hot wax resist dying technique used on fabric. The affected wax applied fabric is then coloured with dyes/ inks can penetrate leaving a multi-coloured patterned design. A truly beautiful and unique process that is fun for all ages and abilities.

Come explore your cultural identity and sense of self through a mask-making workshop ith MCR Wild Wuns performative art collective. Who are you? Where do you come from? Where do you consider home? Make a mask and wear your unique identity with pride!

PatternCraft by MADLAB

PatternCraft is an analogue to digital punchcard reader that teaches the fundamentals of programming and encoding data through the write once medium of a physical punched card. Through the use of sensors, arduino technology and Raspberry Pis, explore how punchcards can be used to program Minecraft, write secret messages, and even compose music.

Young Identity - Poetry Workshop

Calling all aspiring writers, poets and spoken word artists aged 15-25. Whether you’re already penning your own poetry or just fancying giving it a go this is the perfect opportunity for you to work with Manchester’s premiere youth spoken word project, Young Identity.

This fun, drop in workshop will be lead by professional poets and spoken word performers Shirley May and Nicole May who will guide you through poetry techniques and writing activities. The perfect way to spend your afternoon!

Interactive activity by Chaitali Mehta

In these craft workshops you will be making recycled sock toys like bunny, penguin, and snowman. You will also be making friendship bracelets, felt roses and origami paper craft.

Meet characters from the ‘Chellow Heights Prep School’, a school for pets and wild animals, who have all lost their animal instincts. Take part in storytelling activities with the characters and create your own animal characters too. Beware of the Headmaster!

THE DESI CARNIVAL

A project commissioned by Manchester Mega Mela

The Desi Carnival will bring together over 100 community performers of all ages, experiences and walks of life. Through our innovative street performance we have formed a new creative and vibrant Carnival community that acknowledges and celebrates our multicultural society and shared heritage. Specially commissioned for Manchester Mega Mela, The Desi Carnival will transform Platt Fields Park into an explosion of international cultures, music, arts and dance. We invite you to join us at the Mela, create your own carnival costume in our craft workshops, and parade with us and our Elephant through the park.
The Desi Carnival has been produced by Global Grooves in partnership with The Manchester Mega Mela.

About Global Grooves

Since 2003, Global Grooves has brought inspirational Carnival practice from around the world into communities across the North. They are passionate about embracing authentic, diverse art forms with integrity and respect, and to developing a distinctive UK Carnival aesthetic.

Their mission: to unite and empower individuals and communities through opportunities to experience and create inspirational art: in particular diverse music, dance, visual arts, and Carnival.

A huge selection of food stalls will be serving a mouth-watering range of authentic South Asian food. Trading stalls will also offer a wide range of products from traditional and contemporary clothing to music and crafts.

FUNFAIR

The MMM Funfair provides all-round enjoyment for people of all ages! There’s a wide variety of rides to choose form, including roller coasters, slides and bumper cars. Bring your family and friends along to have a go on the exciting rides!

SPORTS

For sports lovers, the TUG OF WAR and KABBADI will take place on SUNDAY between 6.00 pm to 8.00pm
