HIGHLIGHTS OF MANCHESTER MEGA MELA 2016

MAIN STAGE

The Main Stage Programme is being hosted and presented jointly by DM Global and Sunrise Radio. Some of the biggest names on the UK and international Asian entertainment scene will perform over both days. Artists from all 5 countries - Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka will enthral the audience with their show-stopping performances.

CHAI SERAI MARQUEE

CHAI SERAI MARQUEE The Chai Serai Marquee, with a chai cafe and seating provisions, gives the mela-goers an opportunity to relax and enjoy a community led stage programme of folklore, classical and contemporary dance and music.Performances by local school children are an added attraction.

ARTS & CRAFT MARQUEE

The Arts & Crafts Marquee is an activity centre comprising of various Arts & Crafts Workshops, amongst other activities throughout the day.This marquee is always very popular with people of all ages, as it offers free henna painting, rangoli, card making, face painting and balloon modelling.

Magicial Children's Crafts by The Met Madlab

The Met in Bury presents an afternoon of magical children's crafts. There's magic in the air at the Mega Mela! Cast a spell with your own hand made magic wand whilst wearing your wizard crown creations - all created using fabulous recycled materials! Visit this workshop on Sunday 31 st July.

Visual Art workshops by the Contact Theatre

Contact will be delivering visual art and craft workshops for you to enjoy. Visit this workshop on Saturday 30 th July.

Making Shapes! with Manchester Art Gallery

Inspired by their fashion-focused exhibitions at Manchester Art Gallery, join designer, Simone to transform, exaggerate and add drama to your silhouette. Push, pull, gather, loop, tuck, stretch and wrap new shapes that you can wear! The possibilities are endless!

 

Paper Sculpture workshops by Creative Hands Foundation

Children and their families will be able to create a paper sculpture using fabric, paper and glue. Showcasing the traditional clothing worn on special occasions such as marriage and during important celebrations. The Creative Hands Foundation use visual arts and crafts as a tool to improve the well-being of young people and adults in Manchester and enhance their personal development.

Bracelet making with Manchester Libraries & Archives

Get the buzz making wonderful button bracelets with the help of Rubbish Revamped. You can add a special touch with a bee button. The bee is the symbol of Manchester so will make you bracelet extra special. Visit this workshop on Saturday 30th July.

Creative Workshops with Rubbish Revamped

Don't fill up the bin – make a handy little wallet for coins or receipts or become a jewellery designer by transforming old clothes and fabric off-cuts into beautiful brooches. Visit this workshop on Sunday 31 st July.

Weaving with Whitworth Art Gallery -Whitworth Weaving

Join artist Raisa Kabir for an extraordinary weekend of weaving, winding and wrapping inspired by the Whitworth’s collections and spaces. Kicking off Work in Progress, a series of artist residencies all summer at the Whitworth. Meet artists from both the UK and India as they explore the gallery’s South Asian collections to get an insight into what they do and how they make work. Work in Progress runs from the 4 – 31 August.

The Lowry presents arts and crafts activities themed around The Gruffalo’s Child – their big family show for the summer.

Mask Making with Bury Art Gallery

Bury Art Museum will be at the Mega Mela with all things Victorian! Come and explore items from our handling collection, make a mask based on old Victorian animal head photographs or talk to our stall holders about our upcoming programme of exhibitions, workshops,courses and events.

Print Making with Chrissy Webster

“I love working with tactile surfaces and experimenting with texture, light, reflection and transparency. Mosaics have so many possibilities from informal and natural to jewel-like and aquatic, and I push these boundaries with a sense of adventure”.During the Mela workshop people will be creating recycled blocks for mono printing onto paper. Visit this workshop on Saturday 30 th July.

Puppet Making with Vineta Gailite & Michael Holland

Puppet making workshop, using range of materials to create a small creature. Each participant will be able make a unique character with lots of personally from scratch and then take it for a play on a stage with other puppet friends!

Pamphlet making and decorating with Joe Ford

Come and make your own pamphlet with Manchester based artist Joe Ford. Once you're done you can decorate it!

Batik workshop with Rita Patel from Knowsley Community College

Batik is an art/craft form derived from the Middle East, India and Indonesia. Batik is a hot wax resist dying technique used on fabric. The affected wax applied fabric is then coloured with dyes/inks can penetrate leaving a multi-coloured patterned design. A truly beautiful and unique process that is fun for all ages and abilities.

Fun & Games with Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network Watch out for the fun and games on offer this weekend, including water fights, selfie competitions and spray paint canvas!

Don’t forget to visit the arts and crafts marquee!

DANCE WORKSHOPS (provided by Manchester International Festival: Akram Khan, one of the most high profile kathak and contemporary dance choreographers in the UK, brings his world premiere of Giselle,to the Palace Theatre, Manchester this September. Take part in this Giselle dance workshop, for ages 11+ and learn a piece of choreography by Akram Khan, whose roots are Bangladeshi. While the choreography is not traditional kathak, it is ballet influenced by this art form. The workshops will be led by a dance artist and accompanied by a live musician.

workshops will take place on Saturday 30 th at 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

KHOJ (‘The Search’)

Khoj is a new 2016 commission for the outdoor Mela sector and brings together Nutkhut and Cirque Bijou. Nutkhut and Cirque Bijou present a new outdoor show combining circus, dance and music. Drawing on the past and looking to the future, Khoj takes its inspiration from two iconic films - Mela (1948) a classic of Indian cinema and Logans Run (1976), set in the year 2274, which depicts a dystopian future society. Set in the midst of a Mela, two friends get lost in the midst of the chaos, running to find each other, they loose sense of time and each other.

WANDERING ACTS BY GLOBAL GROOVES

Look out for the butterfly performers, circle skirt dancers and wandering band on Sunday 31 st July!

GREATER MANCHESTER LEARNING PROVIDER NETWORK

The Learning Network will be engaging with the mela attendees and raise awareness of the #SEEDIFFERENT campaign as part of their effort to raise awareness around Apprenticeships. They will be handing over promotional goods and provide activities like water fights, selfie competitions and have a large canvas print by encouraging attendees to throw at the canvas and contribute to the end product of a large multi-coloured print. The Network is also doing a fun ‘people verse the Morphs’ competition in which participants do a relay type exercise working together to beat the morphs (or events team, who will be wearing morphs suits,DO JOIN IN THE FUN

STALLS

A huge selection of food stalls will be serving a mouth-watering range of authentic South Asian food. Trading stalls will also offer a wide range of products from traditional and contemporary clothing to music and crafts.

FUNFAIR

The MMM Funfair provides all-round enjoyment for people of all ages! There's a wide variety of rides to choose form, including roller coasters, slides and bumper cars. Bring your family and friends along to have a go on the exciting rides!

SPORTS

For sports lovers, the TUG OF WAR and KABBADI will take place on SUNDAY between 6.00 pm to 8.00pm.ENJOY THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE!
